FAMILY HIKING TIPS

When hiking with children, the most important things are to stay safe and have fun. Here are some tips to make your family activities more enjoyable for everyone.

    • Dress your kids in bright colors, and pack extra clothing and rain gear.
    • Carry extra food and water to keep everyone happy, energetic and hydrated.
    • Select a trail that will accommodate shorter legsand attention spans.
    • Set the ground rules early, such as staying quiet to avoid scaring off wildlife, and keeping hands, feet and mouths off wild plants and mushrooms.

Sunglasses and sunscreen

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends using sunscreen on children older than 6 months. Look for a “Broad Spectrum” sunscreens that protects against UVA and UVB.

Insects

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that repellents used in children over six months of age have 30 percent DEET or 5 to 10 percent picaridin repellent, applied once before going outdoors.
