Trespassers

Turning the Tables on Trespassing

As a wise forester once said, “Unless your woodlot is on the moon, you’ve probably had trespassers.”

Someone trespasses any time they enter your property without your permission. Trespassing is a nuisance, but also a fact of life for many landowners.

It’s a very common problem, especially if you do not live on your property year-round or if you have large wooded areas on your land where trespassers can come and go unseen. At its worst, it can be a dangerous and expensive problem, too, because some trespassers engage in destructive or illegal activities that can threaten your woods.

Fortunately, trespassing is also a preventable problem. There are low-cost, common-sense steps you can take that will strongly discourage it and help keep your property safe.

This section will show you why trespassing happens and what you can do to prevent it.  And if you’re concerned about your legal liabilities or want more information, our legal guide and resources page have the answers you need.
