How do I know if my trees can be sold?

Are there 200 to 300 trees per acre which are 5 inches diameter-breast-height (dbh), or larger, and have at least 40 feet of useable height? If so, a thinning or improvement cut may be possible. Then the only question becomes the number of acres involved and whether or not it is economically feasible for a commercial harvesting operation.

If you were going to clearcut, the number of trees necessary could be less than half the number above, depending on size. The larger the trees, the fewer are needed.

Best to consult a forester. Most can take a quick "look" and tell you what you want to know.
