What kind of bugs are these.
As I was pulling my maple tree taps Sunday, one of the trees was covered with black bugs with red around their head. It had warmed up to about 60 degrees Sunday.
There are pictures of them on my Debray Farm 3/10/13 Journal.

Hi Chuck,
Thanks so much for your question! We consulted with some of the Forest Entomologists at the US Forest Service Forest Health Protection program and here is what they said:
- It is a diurnal firefly:

- Interesting that it says it comes to tapped maple trees, and although firefly (lightening bug) it does not light up.
Hope that is helpful! And let us know if you have any other questions.
