Your Checklist for Prevention
The best hope for keeping Thousand Cankers Disease out of your area is to prevent its spread through moving fresh walnut logs and firewood.
- Don't move firewood. This doesn’t only stop Thousand Cankers Disease. Firewood spreads all kinds of tree diseases. As a rule of thumb, you should avoid moving firewood more than about 10 miles. Don't take firewood from home when you go camping. All kinds of larvae and pathogens can be hiding inside.
- Pesticide. Pesticide won't help diseased trees, but if Thousand Cankers Disease is nearby, it may keep a tree without symptoms from getting sick. The pesticide imidacloprid is injected into the trunk or applied to the soil. Spraying trees doesn't seem to work.
Whether you’re trying to prevent an outbreak or controlling damage from an existing outbreak, you don’t have to go it alone. State, county or consulting foresters, the Forest Service or your local cooperative extension service can all help you protect your woods and preserve your forest legacy.
