The Piney Woods Project

A bright sunny day in a longleaf forest.

Southwestern Alabama has a rich history that includes tall pine trees, lush plants and woods full of quail, turkey, deer, songbirds and much more.  Longleaf pine was the iconic tree that was the backbone of these woods, supporting not only strong timber markets but also the animals that thrive there.  Over the year, the South has lost three quarters of our longleaf forests.  The My Alabama Woods Initiative, a partnership of non-profits, government agencies and the private sector, has come together to help you get more of what you want most from your woods.  We are here to provide you resources and up-to-date information on how to bring back longleaf and all the wildlife a longleaf forest supports.
