What You Need to Know

Emerald ash borer is a beetle from Asia. It was first detected in North America in the Detroit area in 2002, but it probably arrived in southeast Michigan sometime in the early 1990s, hiding in wood packing material. In its short time in the United States and Canada, the emerald ash borer has spread rapidly and killed millions of ash trees along city streets and in forest woodlots.

As the name suggests, the emerald ash borer attacks ash trees. It does not attack mountain ash or other tree species.
