Windstorms

Windstorms can cause serious damage on trees.

When the wind does its worst, it can wreak havoc on the landscape. High winds that don’t occur within tornadoes or hurricanes cause an average of $379 million in property and crop losses every year. These windstorms can claim lives as well, and are responsible for as many as 35 deaths each year.

Because every corner of the country experiences windstorms, every forest is vulnerable to the damage they can cause. But you can take steps to reduce that vulnerability. With a little preparation and planning, you can help your woods weather and bounce back from even the most powerful winds.

In this section you'll learn what windstorms are, how windstorms affect your forest, what to do if high winds damage your woods, and how to protect your woods from the wind.
